Frequently asked questions

Here are some of the most common questions we receive about Creative Minds Art Therapy and the art therapy process. We aim to provide clear and helpful answers to address any concerns you may have.

Who are the children and young people you're trying to help with this page?

All children can benefit from art therapy. I work with any child or young person who wants — or needs — a space to express themselves, communicate their feelings, or explore something deeper about who they are. Some children may be experiencing emotional distress, changes, or challenges in relationships; others simply need time and space to connect with their own inner world. Art therapy offers a safe, creative way to do this — at their own pace, in their own way.

What happens in a session?

Each session offers a calm, containing space where a child can explore thoughts, emotions, and experiences through artmaking. There’s no set outcome or pressure to talk; the process unfolds at the child’s own pace. I may gently support reflection or introduce materials that encourage self-expression, regulation, and insight. The focus is always on safety, attunement, and emotional growth.

How long does therapy last?

Every child’s process is unique. Some children benefit from short-term work focused on a particular issue, while others need longer-term support to build trust and explore at depth. We’ll review progress together and ensure the pace and duration feel right for the child and family.

Where do sessions take place?

Sessions can take place in my private studio or within school or community settings, depending on what’s most appropriate. Each space is carefully chosen or risk-assessed to ensure safety, privacy, and emotional containment.

Does my child need to be good at art?

Not at all. Art therapy isn’t about artistic skill — it’s about expression. The materials become a language that helps children communicate feelings that may be hard to put into words. Scribbles, shapes, textures, or colour choices can all hold meaning and open new pathways for understanding.

Is what my child says or makes confidential?

Yes. Art therapy is confidential and bound by professional ethics. As a registered member of the HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) and BAAT (British Association of Art Therapists), I am legally required to maintain confidentiality, except where there are safeguarding concerns. In those rare cases, I will always aim to discuss the process with you first wherever possible.

How much does art therapy cost?

A standard one-to-one art therapy session (50 minutes) costs £60. Sessions are usually block-booked to provide consistency and support the therapeutic process. Rates for schools, groups, and organisations vary depending on the length, location, and nature of the work. All costs are discussed in advance so that arrangements feel clear and manageable for everyone involved.

Still have questions?

We understand you may have more questions. The single most important thing to know about my therapy is that every child is at the heart of the work. Each session is a space where they are seen, heard, and accepted exactly as they are. There is no judgement — only empathy, safety, and support for whatever they bring. Every thought, feeling, and experience is validated within a relationship built on trust and respect.
